Addiction

Despite the harmful consequences, addiction is a disease in which people become attached to rewarding stimuli. Despite the influence of a number of psychosocial factors, the driving factor behind the development and maintenance of addiction is a biological process – a process triggered by repeated exposure to an addictive stimulus. First, addiction costs people dearly. It affects the whole society through the direct side effects of the drugs. It has been associated with health costs, long-term complications (eg, lung cancer with smoking, liver cirrhosis with alcohol). Classic symptoms of addiction are loss of control over substances or behaviors, preoccupation with substances or behaviors, and continued use despite consequences.
